Explanation of the Coat of Arms
- The Green Galero (Hat) with Twelve Tassels
The green hat with six tassels on each side is the traditional heraldic symbol of a Catholic bishop. It signifies that Bishop Essien possesses the fullness of the priesthood and is entrusted with governing a diocese.
- The Gold Episcopal Cross
The gold cross behind the shield represents the bishop’s ministry as a successor of the Apostles. It reminds him that Christ crucified and risen is the centre of his mission.
- The Shield
The shield is divided into four sections, each conveying a significant aspect of Bishop Essien’s identity and ministry.
Upper Left – The Wiawso State Emblem This depicts the traditional emblem of the Wiawso State (a stool with a keg and crossed weapons). It symbolizes the bishop’s pastoral service to the people of the Diocese of Wiawso and his respect for the culture and traditional authority of the area.
Upper Right – The Bird The bird symbolizes freedom, vigilance, wisdom and a spirit that is always directed towards God. It expresses the bishop’s desire to lead the faithful to higher spiritual ideals through the Gospel.
Lower Left – Carpenter’s Square and Hammer These are symbols associated with St. Joseph, the carpenter. Since the bishop’s baptismal name is Joseph, they represent his patron saint and remind him of the virtues of humility, honest work, obedience and faithful service.
Lower Right – Anchor on the Sea The anchor is an ancient Christian symbol of hope, inspired by Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” It also reflects steadfast faith amid the challenges of pastoral ministry.
